How Invisalign Works
Instead of noticeable metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of lightweight, see-through plastic aligners to move the teeth into their desired positions. Each pair of aligners is designed to resemble a specific stage of your realignment. A complete series of aligners are made at the beginning of your treatment, allowing you to move on to the next pair over the course of several months. Each pair is worn for about two weeks until you complete the series. After you’ve worn every pair, you’ll be given a retainer to keep your newly shifted teeth in place.
Indications for Invisalign
Invisalign has been used to shift teeth for decades already, but it’s only gotten more sophisticated over time. This allows you to treat a wider variety of dental issues, including the following:
Treatment can help for those whose mouth is too small to accommodate their teeth. After you begin treatment, you’ll see your teeth start to shift into straighter positions, even before treatment is finished! Crowded teeth tend to be at higher risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease, meaning Invisalign can be a net positive for your long-term oral health.
Gaps Between Teeth
Whether you have a major gap in your front teeth (diastema) or gaps throughout your smile, Invisalign can work to close them as well as make it more difficult for food debris to get caught in between them. This also makes your at-home oral hygiene easier.
When the bite is misaligned, basic functions like chewing can actively harm certain areas of your mouth. It can be especially harmful to your TMJ (or temporomandibular joint). Uneven bites can also increase your risk for teeth grinding and clenching, a common precursor to TMJ disorder. Invisalign can address underbites, overbites, crossbites, and other types of malocclusions.
The Benefits of Invisalign
In addition to being discreet thanks to their transparent materials, Invisalign’s clear aligners are also removable. This means you can take them out whenever you want to eat, allowing you to enjoy your regular diet during treatment. It also allows you to take photos with friends and family without any potential worry of your clear aligners being visible, if you so choose.
Plus, oral hygiene is simple as well, you can brush and floss like they always have. All you need to do is remove them, practice your oral hygiene as usual, then place them back into your mouth to continue treatment. This is also a great opportunity to soak your aligners in Invisalign’s patented cleaning crystals or denture cleanser if desired. This will keep them plaque-free as well as nice and transparent!
How Much Does Invisalign Cost?
There are several factors that go into determining the cost of Invisalign, including the severity of your misalignment and bite issues as well as your willingness to wear the aligners. For example, you should be wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours a day for the fastest treatment possible. Until we perform an evaluation, we won’t be able to provide a cost estimate. During your consultation, we can discuss your payment options and create a financing plan that fits into your budget.

What Does Invisalign Look Like?
You’ve probably heard that Invisalign is clear, but what exactly does it look like? In short, the aligners are custom-made and crafted from high-quality plastic. In some cases, attachments, buttons, and elastics are utilized, which can change their appearance slightly. Even then, Invisalign is significantly more discreet than traditional braces. In fact, even your friends and family may have a hard time telling when you’re wearing your trays!
How Long Does Invisalign Take?
Since each treatment plan is unique, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to this question. On average, however, patients wear Invisalign for 12-18 months. This may still seem like quite an investment of your time, but traditional braces can take 24+ months! So, as long as you wear your aligners for 22 hours a day and follow your treatment plan to a tee, there’s a good chance you’ll get the beautiful results you’ve been dreaming of significantly sooner with Invisalign.
Does Invisalign Hurt?
Are you worried that Invisalign will hurt? Then you’ll be happy to know that many patients experience little to no discomfort throughout the treatment process. That’s largely because each aligner is custom-made and crafted from smooth plastic. So, they shouldn’t rub up against your gums, lips, and the soft tissue in your mouth.
With that said, it is normal to experience some slight discomfort from the pressure needed to move your teeth into their proper positions. Don’t let this discourage you though – this is a sign that your aligners are working! Plus, the soreness typically subsides quite quickly and can be alleviated with an over-the-counter pain reliever.
What if My Invisalign Broke?
Your aligners are only working to move your teeth when they are in your mouth, which is why it’s so important to meet the 22-hour-a-day wear time. If you lose or break yours, then it’s of the utmost importance that you get in touch with your Beverly Hills dentist right away! That way, they can take a look at your treatment plan and determine the best course of action, like wearing your previous trays until your replacement ones arrive.
Can You Get Invisalign After Braces?
It’s possible! If you’ve had braces before, but have experienced orthodontic relapse, there is a chance that you’re a candidate for Invisalign. Of course, the best thing to do is schedule a consultation. Our Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist would be more than happy to take a look at your teeth, learn about your smile goals, and help you determine if Invisalign is the right treatment for you.
